Interview with Beephouse:
Embracing the Quirky and Creative Spirit of the 80s
The 80s is an iconic era that continues to inspire today's artists. Why is this decade significant for Beephouse?
"The 80s introduced me to a world of exciting technology and bold design. As a young Beephead, I witnessed the birth of MTV and discovered groundbreaking new artists that pushed the boundaries of music and visuals. It was during this time that I learned how to program chip tunes on my first computer, an 8-bit Atari 800XL. I delved into the realm of MIDI, sequencing, synthesizers, drum machines, samplers, and 4-track cassette recorders. The 80s showed me that it was cool to be kooky and creative, combining imagination and technology in fascinating ways."
Streaming platforms feature many retro-inspired genres like synthwave, vaporwave, and chiptunes. How would you describe the Beephouse sound?
"The Beephouse sound is rooted in the essence of 80s new wave while incorporating modern and experimental elements. I utilize a wide range of instruments, from iconic classic synths and drum machines to more traditional instruments like piano, drums, and bass guitar. My vocal style varies from soft and wispy to brassy and harmonious, adding depth and texture to the music. The lyrics intentionally avoid a specific message or meaning, allowing listeners to interpret and resonate with the music in their own unique ways. The culmination of these elements creates the Beephouse vibe – music that is quirky, carefree, fun, and whimsical."
From album covers to fashion, the visual aesthetic can greatly impact the emotion and message conveyed in an artist's work. What is the visual side of the Beephouse experience?
"Video plays a significant role in the Beephouse experience. In the past, I used to immerse myself in makeup, hairstyles, and distinctive wardrobe choices – a true blast from the past! It was exhilarating when I was younger and looked the part. However, as time went on, I found a more fitting expression through cartoons and character animation. These mediums perfectly complement my music, as they bring out the inherent quirkiness and humor found in Beephouse. Through animated visuals, I can capture the essence of the music and create a visually engaging experience for my audience."
As an artist who emphasizes creativity and imagination, how do you keep your inspiration flowing and continually push boundaries with your music?
"I find inspiration in everyday life, whether it's the whimsical stories I stumble upon, the visuals that catch my eye, or the emotions that stir within me. I also make a conscious effort to explore various art forms outside of music, such as photography, design, and film. By immersing myself in different creative realms, I can bring fresh perspectives and ideas into my music. It's all about staying open-minded, experimenting fearlessly, and allowing myself to take risks."
Who are some of your favorite artists from the past and present that have influenced your musical journey?
"From the 80s, Duran Duran has always been a standout for me with their infectious new wave and disco sound. Another favorite from that era is the Japanese trio YMO (Yellow Magic Orchestra) who brought a unique techno sound and showcased incredible musicianship. As for the present, the abundance of material nowadays makes it a bit overwhelming for me to pinpoint specific artists, but I've stumbled upon some captivating artists on YouTube, including EKKSTACY, Knobs, and lots of JPOP artists. It's an exciting time with so much talent to discover and explore."
Could you share some insights into your creative process? How do you go about translating your ideas into music?
"Sometimes it starts with a few notes or a particular sound that guides the rest. I explore different chord progressions, melodic lines, and rhythmic patterns, constantly refining and shaping them as I go. Emotion plays a crucial role—I tap into my own experiences and feelings, infusing them into the music to create an authentic connection. There's a sense of vulnerability in this process, allowing myself to express and channel those emotions into the compositions. It's a constant exploration and refinement, trusting my instincts and allowing the music to evolve naturally."
Can you share your experience with collaboration and how it has influenced your approach to creating music?
"In the past, I had actively engaged in collaborations through various platforms, one of which I absolutely loved called Allihoopa. It provided me with the opportunity to connect with artists from around the world and create music that surpassed my wildest imagination. Working with other artists allowed me to explore different creative approaches and learn from their expertise. It pushed me outside of my comfort zone and challenged me to broaden my musical horizons. Ultimately, though, I discovered that the essence of my musical expression lies in the solitary process, where I can fully immerse myself in my own thoughts, ideas, and emotions. That being said, I will always treasure the connections and experiences I gained through collaboration, as they shaped and enriched my musical journey. It was a valuable chapter that contributed to my growth as an artist, even if my true passion lies in the personal and introspective nature of creating music on my own."
What advice could you give to artists who are struggling with their creative process?
"Always stay true to yourself! Creativity is a personal journey and your art is a reflection of who you are, so don't compare yourself to others. Ignore the haters and critics who may try to bring you down. Focus on creating for yourself and expressing your truth. Trust in your abilities and let your passion guide you."
What's on the horizon for Beephouse?
"Beephouse is all about embracing your true self, fostering creativity, having fun, and sharing that joy with others. As long as I can, I will continue to create music and videos. The advent of social media has provided me with a platform to instantly share my work with Beepheads around the world, connecting with a vibrant community of like-minded individuals. The future holds endless possibilities for Beephouse, and I'm excited to explore new avenues of artistic expression while staying true to the core values that define this project."
